While the Chiefs suddenly needed a new No. 1 receiver in receiver Tyreek Hill visibly upset On the sidelines, late in Monday night’s ugly loss to the Titans, the idea is percolating that the Dolphins could/should simply trade Hill back to the Chiefs.
Although Hill’s post-game comments, if he has even spoken to reporters, have not yet surfaced, coach Mike McDaniel was asked about Hill’s frustrations with the garbage time.
“I would expect him to be visibly angry with someone,” McDaniel told reporters. ‘A lot of times guys can shout at him: he’s a leader and he wanted to do everything he could to make sure the result wasn’t that. In the locker room there are a lot of guys who challenge each other and we get the chance to definitely see what we are made of.”
Hill may have already made a judgment about what the 2024 Dolphins are “made of.” And maybe he sees a way to get another ring while helping the Chiefs get their third in a row by moving back to Kansas City.
In addition to the trade compensation needed to undo a deal in which the Dolphins had given the Chiefs a first-round pick, a second-round pick, two fourth-round picks and a sixth-round pick to get him to get in 2022, that would be Miami. take a big hit in 2025 if they trade Hill now: $41.8 million.
They will also have paid him an additional $24 million in August for the number of games he would play before a trade. (The deadline arrives on the Tuesday after week 9.)
While not impossible, the Chiefs would have to give up a lot to justify the financial impact on the Dolphins. And they are already dealing with major potential financial consequences due to Tua’s still-new contract, which does not protect the team regarding future concussions.
The Chiefs traded Hill away for a reason. They may not be inclined to offer the Dolphins the kind of package that would cause them to part ways with the man who is still their best player.
So while it’s fun to connect the dots, it won’t be fun for the Dolphins to eat up all that money and space. And it won’t be fun for the Chiefs to give up what they would have to give up to bring him back.
